todai’s visitor, Italy may appear, on the one hand, alluring,
dreamy, sacred and majestic, but on the other it is capable of
trasmitting a mediterranean, profane feeling of semplicity. The
original town centre of Lecce – known as the Florence of the South –
is characterized by different styles: rococo, baroque renaissance,
medieval and Roman. But the real protagonist is the splendid Baroque
style. A walk round the old city centre, through innumerable winding
little streets leads you to richly decorated façades which owe their
particular charm to the local stone used to make them: the “alata”
stone. |
